Give Back Day

TOMORROW!

8/8

give back day

On August 8th, on the shores of Eagle Pond, underneath the beautiful canopy of trees that reside in our beloved home away from home, campers will be participating in the long-held Camp Kenwood & Evergreen tradition of giving back to others in need. Mickey’s Kids Give Back Day will be continuing their fundraising efforts this summer with their inaugural 5k run around Eagle Pond!

The slogan “Be a Champ! Send a kid to Camp!” was what Juniper ‘24 and their little sisters came up with as a chant during their successful Mickey’s Kids bake sale in New London earlier this summer.

the story of

Mickey’s Kids

At Camp Kenwood & Evergreen, we have always prided ourselves on fostering a loving, connected, and inclusive community. From 1961 to 1996, under the stewardship of Arthur and Judy Sharenow, these values of love, acceptance, and generosity became deeply ingrained in our camp's culture. The Sharenow's vision was to ensure that the camp experience was accessible to as many children as possible, including those who might not have been able to afford a seven-week sleep away camp.

In 1996, after years of working alongside Arthur and Judy, Scott Brody became the Owner and Director of Camps Kenwood & Evergreen. Scott and his leadership team continued K&E’s commitment to make camp available to families who might not be able to enroll their children without financial help.

One of Scott’s leadership team members was Mickey Dank. Mickey Dank, was a cherished friend of camp, known by all for his infectious smile and joyful laughter. He was the loving husband of Evergreen Director Phylis Dank and father to campers Randi and Bryan. Mickey later became camp’s corporate counsel after his retirement from practicing law. Mickey led the charge to create a new 501(c)(3) organization called “The Kenwood & Evergreen Scholarship Fund” to grow the number of campers from underserved communities by raising additional money to support camperships. A new board was formed to lead this charitable organization, and camp alumni and staff worked hard to grow the number of scholarship recipients sponsored by camp and this new organization.

In early 2002, following Mickey’s sudden passing, Scott and Mickey’s family renamed the K&E Scholarship Fund “Mickey’s Kids” to honor Mickey’s beloved legacy. Randi, Bryan, and Phylis Dank and their friends and family worked tirelessly to raise money to support Mickey’s vision. Together, through various community-building service events and fundraising efforts, such as summer swim-a-thons (at camp) - and fall golf tournaments – Mickey’s Kids was able to sponsor many children so that they could enjoy the benefits of camp, summer after summer.

Mickey’s Kids provided not only financial assistance for tuition but also emotional support and practical help, ensuring each camper was ready for their summer adventures with trunks, supplies, transportation, and trip fees. With the continued commitment of Mickey’s Kids, Scott, and Arthur and Judy before him, Camps Kenwood and Evergreen has provided the gift of camp to generations of campers over many decades.

In 2024, the original board of Mickey’s Kids passed the baton to a new committee of like-minded individuals. The new Mickey’s Kids board is inspired to continue the work of this wonderful organization and are dedicated to growing the number of children who benefit from a childhood of summers at Camps Kenwood & Evergreen. We are excited to announce the return of Mickey’s Kids Give Back Summer Fundraising efforts to help give the gift of camp to those families who need a little more financial help to be a part of our vibrant camp family.

about Mickey’s Kids

Mickey’s Kids is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to bringing the dream of camp to children in need. It provides tuition assistance to children, enabling them to participate in the magic of summer camp. The children, for whom these experiences would not otherwise be available, benefit from a strong network of support, gaining social skills, self-esteem, core values, and a greater sense of personal responsibility.

Mickey’s Kids campers, who typically begin at Camp in the fourth or fifth grade, receive a summer scholarship to attend Camps Kenwood & Evergreen each summer until the completion of ninth grade.
